I’m an emeritus professor of design at the University of Louisville. Louisville is my native city, but I’m a boomerang – earlier in my career, I lived in Atlanta and Brooklyn, and I began my academic career in Lawrence at the University of Kansas. Over the years, my interests have remained fairly constant, revolving between typography, font design, and calligraphic art on the one hand, and design theory and semiotics on the other.

I live with my wife, Laurie Doctor, on the outskirts of Louisville on four acres of mostly wooded hillsides. This web site is a place where I can publish new thoughts, writings, and announce new initiatives. I love dialogue, so feel free to contact me via email; until I get my own email set up here, you’ll find me through UofL at sxskag01@louisville.edu.
